Traveling alone can be very great, you take as much time for something as you want, for example I spend more than 1 h just sitting at the street and listening to street musicians, which my friends would have found very boring. You have also very much time for yourself, you can think about very much. Also you can talk as much or as less as you want, talking with friends is fun but just being quite and wandering around the streets can be also very experiencing.
But if you can take a friend with you do it! Nothing is more fun than experiencing everything with a friend or in the best case with some friends. And if they are really your close friends you can still wander quietly around the streets and enjoying it.
